2024 seems to be quite the year for third-party presidential candidates. There’s Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is running as an independent alternative to President Biden and President Donald Trump. There is Cornel West, professor of philosophy at Union Theological Seminary, who is also running as an independent. And later this year, we may have another entrant — Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who will retire from the Senate in January, at the end of his term. Manchin, a conservative Democrat, seems to think he’d be the perfect standard-bearer should the effort materialize.

Some around Biden agree Manchin may have a point in how to make the pitch. As Biden tries to assert the success of his presidency, Manchin says he shaped “everything” in the president’s agenda. “It’s been far less organized than he expected it to be” and “he doesn’t see a plan coming together,” a person familiar with Hogan’s thinking told CNN. “No matter what side of the fence you might be on, where you are for philosophically, we learned to navigate that,” he told CNN. Several anti-Trump Republicans who listened to Manchin’s speech told CNN they were happy to hear him.

The moderate West Virginia Democrat said Wednesday that he would never want to be a “spoiler” who contributed to getting any other candidate elected. Manchin said it would be “dangerous” to give Trump another term. “Because I Endorsed Big Jim Justice of West Virginia for the U.S. Senate, and he has taken a commanding lead, Democrat Joe Manchin has decided not to seek re-election. Manchin would have had a difficult path to reelection as the only remaining Democratic statewide officeholder in West Virginia, likely running against either GOP U.S. Rep. Alex Mooney or Gov. Manchin has long been friendly with No Labels, which has already begun holding private conversations with potential presidential nominees, Manchin among them.

Senator Joe Manchin Photo: Michael Brochstein/Zuma PressJoe Manchin ’s decision Thursday not to run for re-election to the Senate and instead explore whether he can “mobilize the middle” in American politics has Democrats in a tizzy, and we can see why. They’re one seat closer to losing their Senate majority in 2024. And they especially fear that the West Virginia Democrat might run as a third-party presidential candidate on the No Labels ticket, steal votes from President Biden, and elect Donald Trump.

Sen. Joe Manchin, the West Virginia Democrat who often bucked party leadership and flirted recently with leaving the party altogether, announced he would not seek reelection on Thursday in a blow to Democrats’ chances of retaining the seat. “After months of deliberation and long conversations with my family, I believe in my heart of hearts that I’ve accomplished what I set out to do for West Virginia,” Manchin said in a video statement posted on social media. “I have made one of the toughest decisions of my life and decided that I will not be running for reelection to the United States Senate.”Manchin, 76, was first elected to the Senate in 2010, after serving as the governor of West Virginia. He faced tough reelection prospects next year in the deep red state that had led many to question whether he would bow out of the race. And recent teasing about leaving the party or launching a third-party bid for the presidency added to the intrigue.

Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia is keeping everyone on their toes regarding his plans for 2024. A New York Times report suggested Manchin could step down to lead West Virginia University. The influential West Virginia Democrat may run for reelection to the Senate, which would give the party their best chance of holding the seat. Or he could simply call it quits after a decadeslong political career in West Virginia, which in recent years has morphed from a Democratic redoubt to a Republican stronghold. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) arrives prior to Israeli President Isaac Herzog's address to a joint meeting of Congress at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, July 19, 2023. WASHINGTON — Sen. Joe Manchin on Thursday called on his colleagues to take sorely needed budgetary steps to strengthen the economy after Fitch credit analysts' recent decision to downgrade the United States' long-held foreign issuer default rating. Fitch downgraded the U.S. credit rating from AA+ to AAA on Tuesday, months after having placed the nation's rating on negative watch in May. The credit rating firm cited the U.S. government's lengthy debt ceiling debate, along with the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, in its decision. Manchin's warning comes a day after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen called the Fitch downgrade decision "entirely unwarranted" based on a "flawed assessment."

The West Virginia Democrat’s model has served him well with repeated statewide wins in one of the most conservative pro-Trump states in the nation. For now, Manchin’s noncommittal answers are worrying some of his Democratic colleagues. Polls show that both Biden and Trump, the front-runner for the GOP nomination, are unpopular. It argues, therefore, that 79 electoral votes are potentially at risk for Biden from the involvement of a third-party challenger. Such a challenger would also need to win states where Biden won big, and at least some conservative bastions.

The LatestA federal court in Richmond has halted construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline, setting off a battle with Congress that could end up at the Supreme Court. It was a highly unusual provision that was tucked into legislation that had nothing to do with pipelines — the law to raise the debt ceiling. Congress also included provisions to expedite construction of the pipeline and insulate it from judicial review. Those elements were added as a concession to Senator Joe Manchin III, the West Virginia Democrat whose vote has been crucial to President Biden’s domestic agenda. But environmentalists, Democratic members of the Virginia congressional delegation and some constitutional law experts argue that by directing a change in courts, Congress has violated the separation of powers clause in the Constitution.

WASHINGTON—Sen. Joe Manchin, who has been a decisive vote in Senate Democrats’ narrow majority, called for his Democratic colleagues to hold talks with Republicans on cutting federal spending, ahead of a summer deadline to reach a deal on raising the country’s debt ceiling. “My Democratic friends don’t want to say a word about our out-of-control spending and are outright refusing to even talk to Republicans about reasonable and responsible reforms,” the West Virginia Democrat said in a speech on the Senate floor. “We’re going to pay our debts, we have to pay our sins of the past, but can’t we at least sit down and discuss?” he said. “Can we even talk about that and see if there’s a pathway forward?”
Bernie Marcus, the billionaire cofounder of Home Depot, said Thursday "nobody works" anymore. Marcus donated millions to Trump in 2016 and 2020, and more to other Republicans over the years. In an interview with the Financial Times published Thursday, 93-year-old Bernie Marcus said "nobody works, nobody gives a damn," blaming the change on "socialism." In 2020, he made two separate donations of $5 million each to the Preserve America PAC, a single-candidate PAC that supports Trump. Marcus has also donated extensively to House and Senate races, contributing to a long list of Republican lawmakers that includes Sens.

Sen. Joe Manchin, who represents a coal-producing state, called on the president to apologize to coal workers. Sen. Joe Manchin criticized President Biden on Saturday over comments the president made the previous day about moving away from coal plants in favor of wind and solar energy. “President Biden’s comments are not only outrageous and divorced from reality, they ignore the severe economic pain the American people are feeling because of rising energy costs,” the West Virginia Democrat said in a statement.
For the past two years, Democrats needed Sen. Joe Manchin . Now, he needs them, plus some Republicans. Facing weak support, Mr. Manchin’s proposal to speed up federal environmental reviews of major energy projects was dropped Tuesday from a Senate bill needed to keep the government open. With the permitting measure out of the must-pass legislation, the West Virginia Democrat will have to engage in talks with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle in hopes of reaching a deal by the end of the year.
Manchin's permitting reform plan was struck from a must-pass government funding bill on Tuesday. Progressives opposed it for environmental reasons, while Republicans want an even stronger bill. It's a major defeat for the West Virginia Democrat, who might otherwise have a hard time passing it. The bill would've green-lit a pipeline in Manchin's home state of West Virginia. The removal of Manchin's permitting reform legislation represents an unusual defeat for the usually-pivotal conservative Democrat.

Sen. Joe Manchin finally released the legislative text of his proposed permitting reforms this week, and what a disappointment. His take-it-or-leave-it proposal includes some marginal improvements that will benefit renewables but it creates new regulatory risks for fossil fuels, which is the opposite of what he promised. We say this with regret because we had hoped the West Virginia Democrat had won more in return for his vote to pass his party’s tax increase and climate spending bill. The U.S. economy needs reform to break up regulatory and legal bottlenecks that delay projects for years, if they are ever built. Mr. Manchin had political leverage, but the bill shows he traded his vote on the cheap.
Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) holds up a visual aid while speaking to reporters at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S., September 20, 2022. Senator Joe Manchin on Friday warned that bipartisan opposition to his bill to overhaul energy permitting could derail his plan to attach it to temporary spending legislation and pass it by the end of the month. Manchin, who was interrupted by protesters opposed to the fossil fuel focus of his permitting plan, said that if Congress fails to reform the permitting process, it would jeopardize the clean energy investments the larger bill incentivizes. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm on Friday said the Biden administration continues to support congressional efforts to reform the energy permitting process. "We are very excited at DOE about the potential for streamlining permitting on clean energy projects," Granholm told reporters.
